Vernon · Giverny · A couple’s guide
What can couples do in Vernon and Giverny?
Between Monet’s gardens, the banks of the Seine, the castles and a few unexpected detours, the destination is best discovered without a list to tick off. Here are twelve activities to create a day at your own pace, contemplative, lively or a bit of both.
Check dates and price01 · Compose the day
Four moods.
One destination.
Start with what suits you today. Each itinerary brings together three ideas that are close in atmosphere, but nothing forces you to follow the order: a morning at Monet’s can very well end in front of a meander of the Seine.
02 · In the footsteps of Monet
Look at the landscape
like a painting.
Giverny invites you to slow down. We come there for a work, then we stay for a light, a flowered street, the silence of a garden. This is the most obvious route for a first visit as a couple, and the one that is best prepared in advance.
Claude Monet’s house and gardens
The Clos Normand, the pink house then the water garden form a visit that is experienced almost like a walk through painting. As a couple, take time to notice the details: the perspectives, the colors and the Japanese bridge change with the season.
Our advice Book before you go and check the opening period on the official website, the gardens generally welcome visitors from the beginning of April to the beginning of November.
Prepare the visit on the official websiteMuseum of Impressionisms
A few steps from Monet’s house, the museum explores impressionism, its origins and its extensions. Its programming evolves throughout the season: a good reason to consult the current exhibition rather than fixing your program too early.
For two Alternate between the rooms and the museum garden to keep the visit light, without turning the day into a cultural marathon.
See the official programThe village of Giverny
Rue Claude-Monet, the galleries, the low houses and the private gardens give the village a unique atmosphere. The pleasure comes less from a specific destination than from walking without hurrying, then choosing together where to take a break.
The right rhythm Save this detour before or after a booked tour. Very early or at the end of the day, the atmosphere can be gentler.
Discover Giverny
03 · Along the Seine
Follow the water.
Forget the time.
In Vernon, the river is not a secondary setting. It connects viewpoints, paths and one of the city’s emblems. Choose a short stroll or let the Seine become the guiding light for the entire afternoon.
The Old Mill
Placed on the piers of an old bridge, this half-timbered mill seems suspended above the water. You can see it from the right bank, near the Château des Tourelles: a simple, graphic stop and particularly beautiful when the light goes down.
To be extended Continue on foot on the banks rather than leaving immediately. The viewpoint becomes the start of a walk.
Consult practical informationA cruise on the Seine
Seeing the hillsides from the river completely changes the scale of the landscape. Departures and formats vary depending on the season: guided walk, more intimate outing or one-off event. Check the local offer at the time of your stay.
To anticipate This activity depends more on the season and the departures offered. Always keep a fallback plan on the banks.
See the cruise from VernonThe Seine by bike or on foot
The greenway between Vernon and Giverny connects the two worlds without a car. By bike, the route opens up a real breath of fresh air during the day, on foot, choose a section and accept not seeing everything.
The right reflex Consult the official route and the conditions of the course before leaving, especially if you wish to extend towards the loops of the Seine.
Prepare the route04 · Castles & heritage
Three places.
Three layers of history.
Around Vernon, heritage is not limited to a succession of rooms. A park to explore, a castle leaning against the cliff and a fortress overlooking a meander make up three truly different experiences.
The Château de Bizy
Near the center of Vernon, Bizy combines an inhabited castle, a park and a set of fountains. The interior can be discovered on a guided tour, while the park gives the duo more freedom. It’s a stylish outing without spending all day on the road.
Before the visit The conditions of the castle and the park are not always identical. Consult the visit conditions before arriving.
Prepare the visitThe Château de La Roche-Guyon
The site extends from the shore to the keep, in a spectacular limestone relief. Underground spaces, apartments and vegetable gardens give the visit several atmospheres. The village naturally completes the route.
For the duo Bring good shoes and leave enough time for the panorama: here, the view is as much a part of the experience as the interior spaces.
Visit the official websiteChâteau Gaillard in Les Andelys
The fortress of Richard the Lionheart dominates one of the great loops of the Seine. Even when interior access varies with the season, the landscape and surroundings give the detour all its strength. It is the choice of couples who want to walk and gain height.
Good to know Access is steep and irregular. Check the opening of the high court and adapt your equipment to the weather.

Change the scene.
Or change the rules.
Not everyone wants to visit one after another of monuments. These three ideas bring a break: a great thrill if conditions permit, a shopping break or a fun challenge when the weather decides for you.
A hot air balloon flight
Flying over the landscapes of the Eure or the meanders of the Seine transforms the destination into a rare memory. The exact location, the weather and the service provider determine the departure: it is an experience to be booked, then confirmed.
The right state of mind Keep your schedule flexible. A flight depends on conditions and can be postponed, the panorama cannot be ordered.
Consult the proposed flightsMcArthurGlen Paris-Giverny
For a shopping break for two, the Douains brand village brings together shops, restaurants and services in the same place. The idea works well as a complement to a morning visit or when you prefer an outing without depending on the sky.
Before leaving Consult the brands and opening days directly: one-off offers change and should not alone decide the trip.
See the official websiteBowling or laser game
A game immediately changes the tone of the day: less contemplative, more spontaneous and often revealing of everyone’s competitive spirit. Laser Game Evolution and Oh! Bowling are located in Saint-Marcel, near Vernon, but have two separate sites.
Rain option This is the simple plan to keep on hand when the weather makes walks less attractive.
